Pope urges 'respect' for UN peacekeepers in Lebanon | ABS-CBN News

Pope Francis on Sunday (October 13) asked for an immediate ceasefire in Middle East, urging 'respect' for UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. ''War is an illusion. It is a defeat. It will never bring peace. Please stop'', Francis told the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square for his weekly Angelus prayer. A series of strikes have hit peacekeeping positions and personnel in recent days, most of them blamed by UNIFIL on Israeli forces, drawing condemnation from the United Nations and several foreign nations. A total of five peacekeepers have been wounded. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the United Nations on Sunday to evacuate troops in its UNIFIL peacekeeping force from combat areas in Lebanon, adding that their presence in the area made them hostages of Hezbollah. Pope Francis also prayed for peace in Ukraine and Haiti.
