Popeye and Tintin among Us copyrights entering the public domain now that 2025 has begun

As of January 1st, several works entered the public domain, including Popeye the Sailor Man, early Tintin comics, William Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury," and Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms." Alfred Hitchcock's film "Blackmail" and the Marx Brothers' "The Coconuts" also lost copyright protection. These changes allow new versions of these works to be created without permission. This follows a trend where characters like Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse's "Steamboat Willie" were recently reimagined after losing copyright. More Hollywood classics will follow over the next decade, opening new possibilities for creative adaptations. Al Jazeera’s Laura Khan reports.
