Portugal wildfires: Emergency services pushed to limit as reinforcements arrive

Deadly wildfires in central and northern Portugal have pushed emergency services to the limit as much-needed reinforcements are due to arrive on Wednesday, the country’s civil protection authority says. At least seven people have died due to the fires in Portugal’s Aveiro and Viseu districts, and dozens of houses have been destroyed. Authorities have mobilized more than 5,000 firefighters. The fires have so far burnt tens of thousands of hectares of forest and scrubland. Four heavy water-bombing aircraft sent by Morocco were due to arrive in Portugal on Wednesday. This is in addition to the two water-bombers each sent by Spain, Italy and France after Portugal requested help under the EU civil protection mechanism. A specialized emergencies team of 230 Spanish military personnel is also expected to be deployed in Portugal’s central Viseu district.
