Bulgarian and Spanish farmers protested on Tuesday against what they say is their governments' insufficient compensation and the crisis in the agricultural sector. Bulgarian farmers blocked roads across the country, while Spanish farmers set up makeshift barricades on several major highways, joining colleagues in other European countries protesting high costs, bureaucracy and competition from non-EU nations. Anna Pijoan, a farmer and protester, stated, "Today we are here because we want to take care of the soil and the animals, to stop all these documents (laws) that are coming from Europe, because we don’t want to lose our time making more paperwork." Meanwhile, Manuel Zamudio participated in a slow-go protest in the southern Spanish city of Ronda and said, "We are demonstrating against Europe, against the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU, the bureaucracy we have, and against third-party countries that are introducing products into the country without health controls, and we can’t compete against them." Another farmer expressed, "Prices are choking us, and we are here because we need to be united as the EU Common Agricultural Policy is choking us."
