Private sector should stop using NRIC as factor of authentication: Josephine Teo
Private sector organisations that are using NRIC numbers as a factor of authentication or as default passwords should stop this practice as soon as possible, said Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo in parliament on Wednesday (Jan 8). Ms Teo also said private sector organisations that presently collect partial NRIC numbers to identify people can continue to do so, and that the guidelines for the private sector with regard to the use of NRIC numbers have not yet changed. Ms Teo was addressing questions raised by MPs on the government's policy on NRIC numbers and a recent incident where NRIC numbers were disclosed on the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority’s Bizfile service.
