Project set to reduce CARICOM's food import bill

Global Affairs Canada has invested $10 million Canadian dollars into a new climate-resilient agricultural project. The four-year project, spearheaded by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) is set to reduce CARICOM's food import bill by 2025. Countries set to benefit are Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname under the project titled 'Gender Responsive Climate-Smart Agriculture on Food Systems in the Caribbean'. Barbados does not qualify for funding under this project, but FAO's Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean, Dr. Renata Clarke says data gathered will benefit the entire region. FAO's Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation Specialist, Roberto Sandoval says the time has come for farmers to shift from traditional farming practices to technologically advanced climate resilient farming.
