Deputy Toronto Police Chief Robert Johnson announced on Tuesday the results of Project Titanium, a joint task force with the Province of Ontario that operated from September 2023 to March 2024. The task force resulted in the recovery of over $10 million worth of automobiles. Johnson told media in a press conference that authorities made 124 arrests, with 749 criminal charges being laid. Additionally, eight firearms were seized and 177 stolen vehicles were recovered as a result of the investigation. "This joint task force exemplifies the commitment of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) law enforcement to disrupt the networks behind violent auto thefts, and highlights the crucial role of collaboration in tackling issues that affect all of our communities," Johnson said. "However, law enforcement is just one part of the solution. It's really concerning that 44 per cent of those arrested were out on bail at the time of their arrest, and 61 per cent were subsequently released on bail," he added. The task force pinpointed a criminal network that was responsible for various crimes in addition to vehicle thefts and violent carjackings, including armed home invasions, break-and-enters and store robberies.
