Protests erupt in Seoul following President Yoon's impeachment
Tens of thousands of protesters rallied in Seoul on Friday, expressing their outrage over the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was suspended following his controversial declaration of martial law earlier this month. Demonstrations included both anti-Yoon activists, who voiced concerns about democratic integrity, and supporters demanding his reinstatement. "I wanted to ask Yoon how he could do this (declare martial law) to a democracy in the 21st century, and I think if he really has a conscience, he should step down," said protester Cho Sung-hyo. Meanwhile, rally attendee Moon Myung-sook, said she was furious over Yoon’s impeachment. “I came here with so much anger. I truly believe martial law is justified and acceptable… I am so upset, it brings me to tears, and I am really heartbroken. That's why I came out today to strongly condemn this.” Yoon, who remains in office but without presidential powers, has not complied with various summonses by authorities investigating whether martial law — which he declared late Dec. 3 and rescinded hours later — constituted insurrection. The Constitutional Court is scheduled to hold a preparatory hearing on Friday, which will decide whether to remove him from office or restore his presidential powers.
