Push to criminalize residential school denialism: “Difference between free speech and inciting hate”

NDP MP Leah Gazan and Indigenous groups urged the federal Liberal government to support Bill C-413 during a press conference in Ottawa on Thursday. Bill C-413 “amends the Criminal Code to create an offence of wilfully promoting hatred against Indigenous peoples by condoning, denying, downplaying or justifying the Indian residential school system in Canada through statements communicated other than in private conversation.” “There’s a difference between free speech and inciting hate. Residential school denialism is inciting hate, full stop,” Gazan said.
