Quest for reparations continues
As Barbados and CARICOM continue on their quest for reparations, a leading Caribbean academic has called on the United Nations to support reparatory justice as a development paradigm. The call by Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles came as he addressed the UN General Assembly in New York to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. He says Caribbean countries know all too well the narrative and the tools of terror as the trade de-humanised Africans. Sir Hilary views the ongoing political turmoil in Haiti as evidence of the international community's failure to address the ills brought about by the transatlantic slave trade. Sir Hilary also urged the UN to recommit to the decolonisation agenda for the remaining Caribbean colonies.
