On the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7th Hamas attack in southern Israel, leaders and politicians from across the globe expressed solidarity with Israel and its right to defend itself, while also calling for a ceasefire to bring an end to the suffering in Gaza. U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lit candles to mark the sombre occasion, with Netanyahu saying that Israel was "fighting like lions" during a meeting with U.S. senators in Jerusalem. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly reiterated Canada’s support for a two-state solution, while U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for a “diplomatic” solution to end the conflict in Gaza and expanding military operation in Lebanon. Hamas killed some 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages during its attack a year ago. More than 41,000 people have been killed in the ensuing conflict in Gaza, according to the Gaza health ministry.
