"Happy and touched": Thousands fill the streets as Pope Francis makes historic visit to In
Pope Francis urged Indonesia to live up to its promise of “harmony in diversity” and to fight “religious intolerance” as he visited the southeast Asian country, as he kicked off the longest trip of his tenure. The pontiff met with outgoing Indonesian President Joko Widodo and other Indonesian authorities at the presidential palace, on his first full day in the country. The faith leader also met with Indonesian clergy and nuns, refugees and and was greeted by throngs of Catholic faithful as he visited Jakarta Cathedral. “I don’t know how to express it…I’m so happy and touched,” said Margaretha Lengkong, an Indonesian who was among those who came to see the Pope. The Pope’s tour includes nine days in Southeast Asia, where Christians are a small minority. About 87 per cent of Indonesia’s population of 280 million is Muslim.
