"I wish I died with them": Gazan struggles with loneliness after family killed by Israeli

Abu Sleyma’s house in Rafah, Gaza was struck in an Israeli bombardment in October last year, killing his wife, six children, and two grandchildren. Three months after losing his entire family in an Israeli strike, Palestinian Hamada Abu Sleyma said he is struggling with loneliness. “I wish I died with them… that would’ve been better than me living like this,” he said. “Loneliness is tough, and parting is hard,” he added. Meanwhile, displaced Gazans living in tent camps in Rafah said, “There’s no safety, how will I go back? If we go back, the tanks could target us.” Shady Maarouf, his wife Safeya and their six children gather around a campfire outside their tent, braving the cold and darkness. "This life in Rafah is a tragedy,” Maarouf said.
