Thousands of people poured into the streets of Valencia, Spain, on Saturday to protest the government’s response to the country's devastating October floods and demand accountability. The protesters marched from City Hall to Manises Square to criticize the government’s response to the disaster, which they described as delayed and ineffective. The deadly floods affected some 80 municipalities in the province of Valencia. “We are alive. I don’t know how. And the only thing I want to say is that this abandonment and institutional negligence must be held accountable,” said Angela Quadrilla, a student protester. Demonstrators chanted for the resignation of Valencian government president Carlos Mazón, who they blame for mishandling the emergency response. The October floods resulted in the deaths of at least 217 people, and communities have struggled to recover as survivors and civil organizations demand urgent reforms to disaster management protocols.
