Aurora, Co., Police Chief Todd Chamberlain held a press conference on Friday morning to address the issue of crime in the city, providing an update on an August shooting that brought rumors of Venezuelan gangs overrunning the city. Rumors began circulating in early September when former U.S. president Donald Trump falsely claimed a criminal gang of Venezuelans were "taking over the town" during a town hall. Trump has since commented about Aurora several more times in the past few weeks, including at the presidential debate between him and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. In the Friday update, local police disputed the rumors and said Aurora is a major city that — like most major cities — deals with crime issues, but stressed that they are not "overtaken" by Venezuelan gangs. "This is not an immigration issue, it's a crime issue," Chamberlain said. On Wednesday night, Trump said in a campaign speech he would travel to both Aurora and to Springfield, Ohio, where he claimed during the same debate that Haitian immigrants were eating residents' cats and dogs.
