"This is war": Trump invokes Alien Enemies Act for mass deportations, defying court order

The Trump administration has transferred hundreds of immigrants to El Salvador even as a federal judge issued an order temporarily barring the deportations under an 18th-century wartime declaration targeting Venezuelan gang members, officials said Sunday. "This is as lawless an action as the administration has taken," Lee Gelernt, the lead ACLU attorney said. "it's a wartime authority that can only be used when the United States is in a declared war with another nation or another nation is invading our country," he added. Trump said he was justified in using the wartime act because he saw the increase in immigration, who he claimed were mostly "criminals," as similar to an invasion. "This is war," he said.
