Red Sea attacks: UN Security Council discuss “significant escalation” | FULL
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon to discuss the safety of vessels passing through the Red Sea after Houthi attacks on commercial ships, with a “significant escalation” over the past week. Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and a host of other nations called attacks from the Yemeni-based Houthi a “direct threat to the freedom of navigation” that underpin global trade in “one of the world’s most critical waterways.” Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen have stepped up attacks on vessels in the Red Sea since November to show their support for Palestinian militant group Hamas fighting Israel in Gaza. And, the militant movement said on Sunday that 10 of its naval personnel are dead and missing after three of its boats were attacked by U.S. forces.
