Remarkably well-preserved 50,000-year-old mammoth carcass discovered in Siberia
Researchers in Siberia say the remarkably well-preserved carcass of a juvenile mammoth discovered in thawing permafrost dates back more than 50,000 years. The creature, resembling a small elephant, was recovered from the Batagaika crater, a huge depression more than 80 metres deep, which is widening due to climate change. Maxim Cherpasov, the head of the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory in the city of Yakutsk, says the mammoth was probably a little over a year old when it died but says tests are being done to more accurately predict its age. The mammoth carcass is the latest in a series of discoveries in the Russian permafrost. Last year, scientists discovered the remains of a 32,000 year old saber-toothed cat.
