Reminder to follow protocols when bringing plants in the island
As the invasive millipede continues to be the topic of widespread discussion, Barbadians are being reminded that they must go through the right protocol when bringing plants and other agricultural products into the island. According to Acting Chief Agricultural Officer Michael James, the protocols are necessary and mandatory to prevent the entry of invasive species, which may become a pest of agricultural importance. He made the appeal today during a press conference to update the public about the red millipede, which he says came to Barbados through the movement of agricultural products. And while there is much information floating around Barbados about the red millipede, Mr. James says it is crucial that invasive species are accurately identified. This week, the Ministry of Agriculture released a guide providing various methods for controlling and preventing millipedes from entering residences, utilising both natural and insecticidal approaches.
