Renewed calls for a ceasefire following IDF strike on Beirut, Hezbollah rocket attacks into Israel
The latest escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah prompted renewed calls at the UN for a ceasefire Friday, as Israel struck Beirut in an attempt to kill Lebanon's Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, while Hezbollah fired multiple rockets into northern Israel. At a United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urgently called for an immediate ceasefire. "The war in Lebanon could lead to further escalation involving outside powers," Guterres warned. "We need this ceasefire now," he stressed. "We cannot afford endless negotiations, as we have on Gaza." The United States did not have advanced warning of an Israeli strike in Beirut, President Biden told reporters in Delaware on Friday. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Israeli counterpart as the operation was ongoing, a Pentagon spokesperson also confirmed. Jordan's foreign minister said on Friday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had to be stopped because he was driving the region to a full-fledged war. "It is time to face the truth, and the truth is, unless Netanyahu is stopped, unless this government is stopped, war will encompass all of us," Ayman Safadi told reporters ahead of a U.N. Security Council meeting on Gaza. Meanwhile at that same U.N. Security Council meeting, Israel's U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon said his country would prefer a diplomatic solution to the current conflict, as long as all it's stated objectives can be met.
