There are renewed calls for stronger disclosure laws for companies to ensure victims are aware their information has been compromised. The push comes after new data shows as many as 77,000 people were impacted by Australian government breaches in the first six months of 2024. Between January and June, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) was only notified of 527 data breaches. Breached organisations are only obligated to notify individuals if the incident is likely to result in serious harm.
