Residential school survivor shares story: 'Six of us were taken away'

WARNING: This video contains details of abuse. Survivor Jackie Pizendewatch and her five siblings were forced to attend St. Mary’s Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ont. The school was open from 1897 to 1972. Pizendewatch shared her harrowing experience and recounted the abuse her and her siblings suffered on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A national Indian Residential School Crisis Line is available to provide support for survivors and those affected. People can access emotional and crisis referral services by calling the 24-hour service at 1-866-925-4419.
