Role for artistes in activism against gender-based violence
Local artistes are being embraced in the effort to address gender-based violence. Lecturer and Head of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at the Nita Barrow Unit of UWI Cave Hill, Dr. Tonya Haynes says these professionals are key to social change and transformation. To this end, several have teamed up with the Bureau of Gender Affairs in the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs and the Nita Barrow Unit for an event focused on drawing more attention to the issue. It is dubbed "Arts For Activism: A Cultural Production on Gender-Based Biolence", part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. The public will be entertained through music, poetry, dance, and other live performances during the event, which is set for tomorrow in Golden Square Freedom Park. Soca artiste, Michael "Mikey" Mercer says gender-based violence needs attention, and wants other artistes to lend their voice to the cause.
