Russia and China "will react — and not only politically," if the U.S. deploys missiles in Japan, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday. The statement came as Japan Times reported on Sept. 7 that the U.S. had expressed an interest in deploying a Typhon mid-range missile system to Japan for joint military exercises. Zakharova also stated that Russia's partnership with China is not aimed against third countries, but Moscow and Beijing could "combine their potential" if faced with aggression. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed in May to deepen what they called their "comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation" for a new era. The Russian Defence ministry also released video footage showing anti-submarine warships and aircraft of the Northern Fleet hunting for the "enemy's" submarines in Barents Sea. The exercise is a part of massive "Ocean 2024" naval drills, the largest in the history of post-Soviet Russia.
