Russia launches 1st missile attack on Kyiv since August, Ukraine says
Russia launched its first missile strike on Kyiv since August on Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said. Capital defence forces reportedly destroyed several cruise and ballistic missiles and up to a dozen drones in the early morning. After a devastating strike 73 days ago, Ukrainians have been anxiously awaiting a follow-up missile barrage for months, expecting Russia to deal another massive blow to critical energy infrastructure. Though no casualties were reported, a 48-year-old man suffered head injuries, according to local emergency services. Russia’s latest attack comes as Ukraine continues to urge the U.S. and other allied nations for further defence aid. Speaking with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that “Ukraine's defence cannot be put on hold” and “appeasement will not work.” Blinken has said U.S. President Joe Biden and his administration intend to continue its support for Ukraine until president-elect Donald Trump takes office once again on Jan. 20, 2025.
