Russian oil tanker planned to sabotage more undersea power cables, Finland says
Crews on board an oil tanker accused of sabotaging undersea power and communications cables in the Baltic Sea were poised to cut additional cables when authorities boarded in December, Finnish investigators said Monday. Risto Lohi of the National Bureau of Investigation, who heads up the investigation into the sabotaged cables, said other cables in the area – including the Estlink1 and the BalticConnector gas pipe between Finland and Estonia – were under threat. “There would have been an almost immediate danger that other cables or pipes related to our critical infrastructure could have been damaged," he said. Lohi said a ninth crew member from the ship, which was carrying Russian oil, was added to a list of those being treated as suspects and barred from travelling outside of Finland. Authorities announced earlier in January that 24 crew members were barred from travel amid the ongoing investigation.
