Saskatchewan Stabbings: JSCN introduces alert system after inquest recommendations

James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN) leadership signed a partnership on Wednesday, gaining access to a new emergency alerting system one and a half years after a mass stabbing on the First Nation. FirstAlerts, part of the anonymous chat app Talking Stick, will allow First Nations leaders to issue emergency alerts to their communities about missing persons, natural disasters and public safety emergencies. "An app like this will help our First Nation to respond quickly and to provide protection and advance warning to all of our membership," Peter Chapman Band Chief Robert Head said. James Smith Cree Nation Chief Wally Burns added that, “Using FirstAlerts is another way for us to feel safer as a community after we’ve lived through such tragedy.” With 25,000 downloads through the Talking Stick app, the system's creators believe there's already a strong base of users able to get notifications. Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Vice-Chief Edward Lerat said, "It's another layer that is available to our nations in terms of communication and letting our membership know when there is an emergency."
