Serbia protesters clash over government corruption allegations in wake of railway canopy collapse
Scuffles broke out between pro and anti-government protesters in Serbia on Wednesday, as public anger remained high after 15 people died when a canopy collapsed at a railway station earlier in November. The protest, called by the opposition, against the demolition of a bridge in the Serbian capital, was disrupted by supporters of the ruling party, according to an opposition lawmaker. "They started to kick us, they started to break through the blockade with the intention of suppressing us — it was tense," said lawmaker Marinka Tepic, before fresh scuffles began behind her. Opposition leaders and the public have taken to the streets repeatedly, blaming the collapse in the western city of Novi Sad on government corruption and nepotism that resulted in shoddy construction. The ruling coalition denies those charges, but President Aleksandar Vucic said those responsible must be held to account.
