In parliament on Monday (Nov 11), Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said that the country's neutrality in most geopolitical issues is "the most sensible position". He was responding to a question by opposition MP Gerald Giam on the sustainability of maintaining neutrality in an increasingly polarised world. Mr Balakrishnan warned that taking sides would be "a recipe for disaster" that could recreate Southeast Asia into "an arena for proxy wars."
