Singapore's orchid diplomacy: Book features stories behind 60 hybrids named after world leaders
The first-ever book on the nation's use of orchids for diplomacy was launched on Jul 29. The Foreign Affairs Ministry and National Parks Board say the book also marks Singapore's 60th year of independence in 2025. The book features the stories of 60 orchids hybridised by Singapore, then presented to world leaders and international organisations. Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan says each story marks a milestone in diplomatic relations. CNA speaks to Philip Paul Peters from the Protocol Directorate at the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Mark Choo, Assistant Curator with the National Orchid Garden. They discuss the history of orchid diplomacy and the challenges orchid growers face in trying to breed the different varieties.
