Singapore welcomes Myanmar's decision to send non-political official to ASEAN retreat

Singapore has welcomed the Myanmar army's decision to send a non-political official to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Laos. Myanmar's military leaders have been barred from ASEAN summits and ministerial meetings since the February 2021 coup. Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan described the meeting with Myanmar's official as friendly and constructive. He added that the bloc’s ministers also discussed challenges in the wider geopolitical spectrum.
