Singh says Canada must ‘shut off’ critical minerals to US to counter Trump | FULL
New Democrat Party Leader Jagmeet Singh called for the flow of critical minerals into the U.S. to be “shut off,” as Canada prepares for U.S. president-elect Donald Trump to take office. Trump has promised to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods after his inauguration on Jan. 20. “Donald Trump is not rational. You can’t discuss a plan over a meal with him. He is a bully and bullies understand only one thing – and that is strength,” Singh said. “Let’s stop the flow of these critical minerals into the States. There’s no quicker way to get Donald Trump to back away from tariffs.” Singh also suggested that other options, like restricting oil exports into the U.S. and retaliatory tariffs, could also be on the table. Meanwhile, Ottawa has begun looking at a list of items that could face retaliatory tariffs if Trump moves forward on his threat. A range of items are being considered, including orange juice from Florida and steel from Michigan and Pennsylvania. Experts say Canada’s response is likely to be proportional to whatever is imposed by Trump.
