South Africa's significant backing of the Palestinian cause throughout history

South Africa has long been an advocate of Palestinian rights. Last month it took Israel to the International Court of Justice, accusing it of genocide in Gaza. Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller looks back at the history of its support for Palestinians. Arina Muresan, a senior researcher with the Institute for Global Dialogue, says South Africa’s representatives will likely address accountability from Israel for its actions in the occupied Palestinian territories. “It’s important for the South African delegation to really echo the presentation it made in January to the ICJ and really drive home the mass violations of Israel’s aparthied,” she told Al Jazeera. Muresan noted while there’s been much support in the country because of the history of aparthied, there has been division about how firm the South African government has been in its accusations against Israel. “In terms of South Africa taking the first stance, many censured these actions. In international politics, such actions can isolate you.
