South Korea's 4B movement goes viral as Trump's win highlights women's rights, author

Speaking on Friday (November 8), South Korean feminist author Lee Min-gyeong said Donald Trump's win in the U.S. presidential election would draw attention to women's rights and encourage more to join a fringe feminist movement. Lee is an early member of the 4B movement, which is believed to have originated in South Korea. It has been gaining recognition among U.S. women on social media platforms such as TikTok and X in recent years, but there has been a spike in interest since Trump's election victory. The term "4B" refers to no dating, no marriage, no childbirth and no sex in Korean — biyeonae, bihon, bichulsan and biseksu. While it is unclear who started it exactly, experts say it emerged as the global #MeToo movement was making waves and as a series of sex crimes shocked South Korea, including thousands of cases of spycams being used to secretly film women. Abortion rights were one of the leading election issues. Trump, who has said abortion laws should be determined by U.S. states, takes credit for appointing three of the conservative justices in the majority in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 abortion ruling that ended the recognition of a woman’s constitutional right to abortion. Reproductive rights were among his election rival Vice President Kamala Harris's signature issues. "Since it is a case (Trump's reelection) that gives bad impact on women's human rights, such as the right to terminate a pregnancy, I think there has been a lot of interest in (women in the U.S.) to join this (4B) movement because they must have felt the need for some sort of action to solve this issue by themselves," said Lee.
