South Korea's impeached Yoon survives arrest attempt as authorities mull next step
Supporters of impeached South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol camped outside his residence and faced off with police on Friday (January 3), as authorities sought to execute an arrest warrant for him. Yoon is under criminal investigation for insurrection over his short-lived martial law attempt on December 3, 2024. An arrest would be unprecedented for an incumbent South Korean president. A team of police officers and investigators from South Korea's Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) arrived at Yoon's residence shortly after 7 a.m. (2200 GMT on January 2) then entered on foot to arrest the president. Once inside the compound, the CIO and police were outnumbered by cordons of Presidential Security Service (PSS) personnel, as well as military troops seconded to presidential security, a CIO official told reporters. South Korea's presidential guards and military troops prevented authorities from arresting the impeached president on Friday after a tense six hour stand-off inside Yoon's compound in the heart of Seoul. The CIO called off the effort at around 1:30 p.m. (0430 GMT) and said it "deeply regretted" Yoon's attitude of non-compliance.
