South Korea's president agrees to lift martial law, hours after imposing it

South Korea’s Parliament voted to immediately lift a martial law order just hours after it was declared by the country’s President Yoon Suk Yeol. In a late-night address, Yoon vowed to elimination what he calls “pro-North Korean anti-state forces” and said the opposition parties had taken the country’s parliament hostage. He said he had no choice but to declare martial law. The president ordered the military to withdraw from the National Assembly’s grounds Wednesday morning, following the vote lifting the decree. He said he would formerly lift the declaration after meeting with his Cabinet.
