South Korea completes identification of all 179 victims of Jeju Air plane crash
Authorities have finished formally identifying the 179 victims of the country's worst air disaster, South Korea’s acting president Choi Sang-mok said at an intra-agency meeting on Wednesday (January 1). Funeral procedures have begun and a joint investigation was underway, Choi said at the meeting. South Korea's transport ministry said two more U.S. officials arrived late on Tuesday (December 31) to join a team of around two dozen investigators including those from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Federal Aviation Administration, and aircraft maker Boeing. All 175 passengers and four of the six crew were killed on Sunday (December 29) when the Jeju Air plane belly-landed at Muan International Airport, plowed into the sand-and-concrete embankment and burst into a fireball. Investigators are considering possible reasons such as bird strikes and disabled control systems on the aircraft for the pilots' apparent rush to attempt a landing soon after declaring an emergency.
