South Korea opposition moves to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo
Opposition members in South Korea's parliament submitted a motion on Thursday to impeach Han Duck-soo, the country's prime minister and acting president. The challenge to Duck-soo comes after he refused to appoint three justices to fill the Constitutional Court bench that is reviewing the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. After the impeachment motion was introduced, South Korea's lawmakers voted in favour of the three nominees of Constitutional Court judges at the plenary session, but they have yet to be formally appointed by Han. Meanwhile, South Korea's ruling People Power Party urged the opposition party to stop its attempts to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo. "What the Democratic Party seeks to impeach today is not the acting president, Han Duck-soo, but the government itself, the livelihoods of the public, diplomacy, and South Korea," said acting PPP chair, Kweon Seong-dong. If Han is impeached, the finance minister will assume the acting presidency. The Democratic Party has majority control of parliament, but there is disagreement between the parties and some constitutional scholars over whether a simple majority or a two-thirds vote is needed to impeach the acting president.
