South Korea’s transport minister intends to step down after the deadly Jeju Air plane crash that killed 179 people on Dec. 29. Speaking in Sejong on Tuesday, Park Sang-woo said, “I feel heavy responsibility for this disaster.” Though Park said he will work with the transport ministry to swiftly improve the safety of airport landing systems — which experts say contributed to the tragedy — he added that he will find a suitable time to resign once the work is done. 181 people were aboard the Boeing 737-800 that slid off the Muan Airport runway before fatally crashing into a wall and exploding. Two crew members were the only survivors.
