Some 3,800 elementary schools across South Korea have closed in the last 40 years due to falling enrolment, especially in rural areas, according to local reports. This comes as the country faces a demographic crisis with the world’s lowest birth rate, and is on track to become a super-aged society in 2025, when people over the age of 65 will account for 20 per cent of its total population of 52 million. One school in Yangpyeong county in Gyeonggi province has dealt with its lack of students by opening its doors to grandmothers who had missed out on an education in their younger days.
