South Korean impeached president defies arrest warrant after near-6-hour standoff
South Korean authorities failed to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday over his martial law declaration, after evading a crowd of protesters outside his compound but coming to a near-six-hour standoff with presidential security forces inside. South Koreans expressed mixed feelings regarding the suspended arrest of President Yoon. Kim Kyung-min, a South Korean citizen, stated that he would have preferred a court decision to be made first. "I think it is not appropriate to arrest the sitting president with shame," he said. Meanwhile some supporters of President Yoon have started adopting the "Stop the Steal" slogan, popularized by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's supporters after his re-election loss in 2020. "I think President Trump would support President Yoon Suk Yeol, by weighing in that impeachment is not right, it's illegal. So, I believe the impeachment (of Yoon Suk Yeol) will be invalid," said supporter Park Chae-yeon.
