South Korean president blocks bill calling for new probe of Itaewon crowd crush
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has blocked a bill that would have launched a new independent investigation into the 2022 Halloween crowd crush in Seoul's Itaewon district. More than 150 people died in that tragedy. The special bill was passed by the opposition-led National Assembly three weeks ago, without the support of the ruling People Power Party. President Yoon has vetoed the bill and instead endorsed a motion demanding the National Assembly reconsider the legislation.
