South Korean lawmakers on Friday discussed a special prosecutor investigation request on treason allegations over the declaration of martial law by president Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon's declaration of martial law late on Tuesday sought to consolidate power, ban political activity and censor the media. It sparked outrage on the streets and concern among South Korea's international allies. The defence minister, who recommended the move, has resigned. Meanwhile, the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) led a protest of an estimated 50,000 people who gathered near parliament. Protesters were seen chanting slogans and performing on stage, with banners saying "Immediate arrest (Yoon Suk Yeol)!" and "Step down Yoon Suk Yeol!"
