Spain floods aftermath: Financial cost still being calculated

The aftermath of Spain's devastating flash floods has left the Valencia region grappling with multiple costs: human lives, psychological trauma, and economic damage. While the full extent of the catastrophe remains unknown, initial estimates suggest potential losses of 25-30bn euros for companies and infrastructure. The floods, caused by a seasonal storm system called DANA, have destroyed businesses and infrastructure and strained the country's political fabric. The government has announced aid packages totalling $15.3bn to assist with rebuilding efforts. Questions arise about whether the disaster could have been prevented, as a flood prevention plan developed in the mid-2000s was largely unimplemented due to government cost-cutting measures. The recent events have renewed interest in such preventative strategies. Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports from Valencia.
