Sports cards evolved: How the hobby went from the Junk Wax era to big business
As the calendar flipped to 2024, the sports card hobby had a great deal of anticipation brewing inside. Hobbyists new and old were looking forward to chasing cards of new generational talents, such as Connor Bedard and Victor Wembanyama. The industry went through a major boom when COVID-19 hit in 2020, bringing back many who may not have opened a pack of cards for a couple of decades. But for those who had been away for a long time, they found just about everything had changed from when they collected in the 80s and 90s, a period now known as the Junk Wax era.
