Over 300 students of the St. Peter’s Private Primary School in Pointe-a-Pierre took a stand against violence through their school’s walkathon on Saturday. From as early as 6am, the students gathered at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella to begin the walk which ended at the school’s compound. The event was done under the theme, “Say No to Violence.” Principal Georgette Medford said the objective of the walk is in keeping with the Ministry of Education's Say No To Violence directive, which is a mandate for activities every term across the Academic Year. "So this is our first activity for Say No To Violence Day to commemorate that day, and it's our biggest activity. The other activities across the two terms are going to be held in school where we plan to have a no bullying zone, which is actually going to be constructed next week, as well as an art exhibition and a poetry competition where we will display and showcase our students' work." The Principal was elated to see so many of the students and their families turn out for the event. She said these events enforce the values, attitudes, and behaviours that many would like to see in society. "You know they say school is a microcosm of society so we have to start taking our role seriously as that secondary institution for training and growing our children in the way that we want them to grow so that they become productive citizens of our twin island." She encouraged other schools to do their part to change the narrative. " I want to throw a challenge out to all the educators across Trinidad and Tobago, and dare I say the world, to following in our footsteps. I know many schools would have done it already and I'm just throwing out a challenge. Let us make our students the fine examples that we want our citizens to be." The International Day Against Violence And Bullying At School was commemorated on November 7th.
