Strip Searches: In 'the police interest to follow Greater Manchester Police', says Dame Ve

Strip searches are no longer being carried out by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) except as a last resort, after an independent review into the force's treatment of women and girls in police custody. A Sky News investigation in 2023 into the custody practices of GMP led to the inquiry by former victims' commissioner Dame Vera Baird. She told us the recommendations implemented from her report “should be a blueprint” for the rest of the UK. If "unlawful practices can be cancelled in one force, then it makes it all the clearer that they're unlawful in others", she said.
