Student averts escalation of violence at Deighton Griffith
Quick action by a student averted an escalation in violence at Deighton Griffith School when he relieved another student of a cutlass. According to the Ministry of Education, two students were involved in a situation resulting in one student being struck by the other. The ministry says the Barbados Police Service and parents of the students involved were called to the school. Two education officers went to the institution and assisted with the necessary counselling for all involved. However, while thankful there was no major incident, General Secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers Herbert Gittens says teachers are concerned about the increase of violence in schools. As reports of the incident at Deighton Griffith circulated on social media parents rushed to the school to ensure their children were safe. Some of them who stood outside the gates spoke to members of the media.
