Sudan’s conflict leaves civilians at risk as unexploded ordnance threatens lives in the capital

Sudan’s ongoing conflict has left many areas in the capital filled with unexploded ordnance (UXOs), including mortar, tank, and artillery shells. These faulty explosives, which failed to detonate upon firing, pose a significant threat to civilians, especially in residential areas. Since the fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces began, over 100 people have died from UXO-related explosions. The Sudanese government is working to clear UXOs in areas it controls, but removal remains difficult in regions under RSF control. The danger from these remnants of war could persist for years. Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reports from Omdurman in the capital Khartoum.
