Researchers have created antibiotics to combat bacteria strains called “superbugs,” according to a joint project between Dalhousie University, the University of Toronto (UofT), and pharmaceutical development company DeNovaMed Inc. Beginning over ten years ago, Dr. Christopher McMaster and his team used a computer-aided method to design a group of antibiotics to target ACPS, an enzyme present in all major multidrug resistant bacteria. McMaster says these antibiotics address a severe threat to human health. One of the first applications of the drug is treating infections, such as diabetic foot ulcers. As Jake Webb reports, the project's lead says this antibiotic family could save millions of lives.
